Amwell Valley Vineyard was established in 1978 by Michael and Elsa Fisher. Dr. Michael Fisher is a Distinguished Senior Scientist at Merck Research Laboratories in Rahway, N.J. and was a recipient of the 1987 Thomas Alva Edison Patent Award. Michael Fisher is the President of Amwell Valley Vineyard and his son, Jeffrey Fisher is the Vice President and owner with his wife Debra.
Dr. Fisher after reading an article in Scientific American about the various grape growing regions in the world contacted one of the contributing authors, Philip Wagner of Boordy Vineyards in Maryland. Under the tutelage of Mr. Wagner, the Fishers planted various types of French/American hybrid vines. After their first harvest, they set about experimenting with various fermentation formulations to determine the best method for producing dry, French-style wines.
Dr. Fisher, along with three other associates, set out to overturn the somewhat archaic wine laws of New Jersey. This was successfully accomplished with the help of Congresswoman Barbara McConnell, who introduced and got passed into law the Farm Winery Act of 1981. Amwell Valley Vineyard was the first New Jersey Winery licensed on August 31, 1982, under the Farm Winery Act.
Amwell Valley Vineyard is situated on a 30 acre farm on which the Fisher home is located. The winery which is in a cement block building at the left of the entrance road was built from the ground up and incorporates state of the art stainless steel fermentation and bulk storage equipment from Europe and the United States. All of the crushing and destemming processes occur on the exterior of the winery building. Further down the drive on the right hand side is the tasting room, office, tax paid room and bonded area. The view out of the etched glass windows is of the surrounding vineyards and the largely unspoiled and undeveloped valley stretching a couple of miles to the row of large hills called the Sourland Mountain Range.
Directly across from the tasting room is a newly constructed building that houses the next stage of expansion to the ever increasing presence of Amwell Valley Vineyard wines. Due to the demand experienced by the winery we have installed in the new facilities a fully automated bottling line, offices and a multi-purpose room to be used for any occasion. The state of the art GAI 1502 EL filler-corker and the OMB ET 2C/DC auto-capsuler and pressure sensitive labeler are the latest examples of the desire to manufacture and provide the very best wines for our loyal customers. In our multi-purpose room we have placed 6 large plate glass windows and a deck that runs the full span of the building in order to take advantage of the view of the vineyard and valley during the ever changing seasons.
They currently produce 19 types of wine from both French vinifera, French/American hybrids and fruit trees which are grown on approximately 15 acres. All of our wines are grown, produced and bottled by our winery.
Our wines are marketed only in the state of New Jersey. Most of our sales are from our tasting room at the vineyard. They are open for tours and tastings 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday, and at other times by appointment. The recently added decks to the side of our tasting room and multi-purpose building, which overlooks the vineyard and the Amwell Valley, is ideally suited for picnics and social events. They welcome inquiries for wine and cheese parties and are happy to arrange these and other events to suit individual requirements. Private labeling is available for all occasions.
They have five retail outlets, located at The Old River House in Clinton, La Casa Bianca in Whitehouse Station, Basilico in Millburn, The Cliffdale Inn in Port Murray and Carretino in Hillsborough. They also have one joint outlet with Unionville Vineyards at Max's Bistro in Flemington. Awareness of the quality of New Jersey Farm Wineries is helped by wine festivals held by the Garden State Winegrowers Association in the Spring, Summer and Fall each year at various winery locations.
